Hand vein treatment in Los Angeles and Walnut CA

Hand Vein Treatment in Los Angeles & Walnut

Prominent, ropy veins on the back of the hands are among the most telltale signs of aging — and one of the most treatable. As we age and lose subcutaneous fat and skin elasticity, hand veins that were previously hidden beneath the surface become increasingly visible, giving the hands an older, more skeletal appearance. At Vein Care Medical Center in Los Angeles & Walnut, Dr. Michael D. Landau treats hand veins using focused sclerotherapy — the same injectable technique used to eliminate varicose and spider veins on the legs — with excellent cosmetic results. Why Do Hand Veins Become More Visible?

Hand veins are normal structures that become more prominent for several reasons:

  • Age-related fat loss — the subcutaneous fat that cushions and camouflages hand veins diminishes over time
  • Skin thinning — aging skin becomes thinner and less elastic, offering less coverage over underlying structures
  • Weight loss — significant or rapid weight loss accelerates fat loss in the hands, making veins more visible
  • Low body fat — naturally lean individuals or athletes often have more prominent hand veins at any age
  • Heat and exercise — veins dilate in response to heat and exertion, making them temporarily more visible
  • Genetics — hand vein prominence tends to run in families

Unlike leg veins, prominent hand veins are rarely caused by venous insufficiency or valve failure. They are almost always a cosmetic concern driven by volume loss and skin changes rather than a medical condition.

Sclerotherapy for Hand Veins at Vein Care Medical Center

Dr. Landau uses Direct Vision Sclerotherapy to treat prominent hand veins. An FDA-approved sclerosing solution (Sotradecol® or Asclera®) is injected directly into the targeted hand veins using a very fine needle. The sclerosant irritates and collapses the vein wall, causing it to harden and close. The body then gradually absorbs the treated vessel over the following weeks, resulting in a smoother, more youthful hand appearance.

The procedure is performed in-office with no general anesthesia and no incisions. Multiple veins can be treated in a single session. Patients can typically resume normal hand use the same day, though strenuous activities involving the hands may be restricted briefly.

What to Expect After Hand Vein Treatment

Some bruising, swelling, or tenderness at injection sites is normal and typically resolves within one to two weeks. The treated veins fade gradually as the body absorbs them — most patients see significant improvement within four to eight weeks of treatment. Final results are usually visible at three months. Some patients require a second session for optimal clearing.

Are Hand Veins a Medical Problem?

In the vast majority of cases, prominent hand veins are a cosmetic concern rather than a medical one. However, if you notice sudden changes in hand vein appearance, asymmetry, pain, or hardness along a vein, evaluation by a specialist is appropriate to rule out superficial thrombophlebitis or other pathology. Dr. Landau can assess and advise at your consultation.

Hand Veins — Frequently Asked Questions

Is hand vein treatment the same as leg vein treatment?

The technique used — sclerotherapy — is similar to what is used for leg veins, but the treatment approach is adapted for the anatomy of the hand. Hand veins are treated using Direct Vision Sclerotherapy with very fine needles, targeting the prominent surface veins on the dorsum (back) of the hand. Unlike leg vein treatment, hand vein sclerotherapy does not require duplex ultrasound guidance in most cases, as the veins are directly visible.

Will hand vein treatment affect hand function?

No. The veins treated on the back of the hand are superficial cosmetic vessels. Eliminating them does not impair hand function, circulation, or blood flow — the treated veins are not critical to hand physiology and blood is readily rerouted through deeper vessels. Patients can typically resume normal hand use the same day, with brief restrictions on strenuous activities.

How many treatments are needed for hand veins?

Many patients achieve their goals in a single session. Those with more extensive or numerous veins may benefit from a second session four to six weeks later. Dr. Landau will assess your hands at consultation and give you a realistic estimate of how many sessions will be required.

How long do hand vein treatment results last?

Treated veins are permanently closed and will not return. However, other veins on the hand may become more prominent over time as aging continues. Periodic touch-up treatments can address any new veins that develop. Most patients enjoy their results for several years before any additional treatment is desired.

Is hand vein sclerotherapy painful?

Most patients tolerate hand vein sclerotherapy very well. The injections use a very fine needle and produce a brief stinging sensation similar to a mosquito bite. No sedation or topical anesthetic is required. The entire procedure typically takes 30 minutes or less.

Is hand vein treatment covered by insurance?

Hand vein treatment is cosmetic in nature and is not covered by insurance. Vein Care Medical Center offers CareCredit financing with zero-interest options. Contact our office for current pricing.

Are there any risks associated with hand vein sclerotherapy?

As with any sclerotherapy procedure, possible side effects include temporary bruising, swelling, tenderness, and skin darkening (hyperpigmentation) along the treated vein. Serious complications are rare when the procedure is performed by an experienced specialist like Dr. Landau using appropriate agents and techniques. Dr. Landau will review all risks and expectations with you at your consultation.
